US Authorizes Secret Actions in Venezuela – Level 1

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, is allowing secret actions in Venezuela. He says the reason is to fight against drug cartels, but some people believe the real goal is to remove Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro. A newspaper, The New York Times, first reported this. Later, President Trump confirmed the story. He said there are many reasons for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to be in Venezuela and suggested that soldiers might also go there. The U.S. has sent ships, submarines, and soldiers to the area near Venezuela. The U.S. government calls President Maduro a criminal and is offering a $50 million reward for information that helps arrest him. President Maduro responded to Trump’s threats. He called the American president’s comments aggressive and strange. Maduro said the U.S. is trying to carry out a coup to remove him from power. In response to the American military movements, the Venezuelan government has prepared its defense forces in its largest cities to be ready for any conflict. It is a time of high tension between the two countries.
