Uruguay Approves Law to Legalize Euthanasia – Level 1

Uruguay has a new law about euthanasia. Euthanasia is when a doctor helps a very sick person end their life. This is for people with a serious illness that causes a lot of pain and cannot be cured. The person must ask for this help and be able to think clearly to make the choice. Uruguay is known for making new and modern laws. For example, it made abortion legal. Now, Uruguay is the third country in Latin America to allow euthanasia, along with Colombia and Ecuador. However, Uruguay is the first country in the area to create a specific law for it. In the other two countries, courts made the decision, not the lawmakers. This new law shows that Uruguay is a leader in making progressive rules in the region. The goal is to give people with no hope of recovery a choice to end their suffering with dignity and medical support.
