Now, they are forced to rely on the kindness of friends and relatives for a place to sleep each night, a practice known as ‘sofa surfing.’ Their situation is stressful and uncertain. The family’s car is their only private space during the day. This crisis affects many people. Justin, a social worker, also became homeless after the emergency shelter where he worked and lived was sold. He has moved 25 times in the last 10 years. The lack of affordable housing and government support creates a difficult cycle for thousands of people across the country.
