Uruguay’s government has approved a new law that decriminalizes euthanasia. This legislation allows people who have serious and painful diseases to ask for medical help to end their own lives. The country now allows any person diagnosed with an incurable disease, or one that causes unbearable suffering, to have this procedure, as long as they are considered mentally able to make the decision. Uruguay is known for being a pioneer in progressive laws, such as the legalization of abortion and the regulation of marijuana. With the Senate’s approval, Uruguay becomes the third country in Latin America, along with Colombia and Ecuador, to allow euthanasia. But it is the first in the region to approve the procedure through a law passed by its legislature. In the other two cases, the procedure was authorized through court decisions.
