Racism and Solidarity in Dublin: A Brazilian’s Story – Level 2

In Dublin, Ireland, a Brazilian hairdresser named Laís Mendes experienced a severe racist incident. An older woman verbally attacked her and her friends, a scene which was recorded. For Laís, who has lived in Dublin for eight years, this was not the first time she faced harassment from this individual, but on this particular day, the aggression was much more intense. She described the pain as something she had never felt before.
This event highlights a larger issue in Ireland, which is home to about 80,000 Brazilians. In recent years, immigrants have reported a noticeable increase in cases of racism and xenophobia. Irish police statistics confirm a rise in hate crimes, with race and nationality being the main reasons for discrimination. Laís reported the incident but was told little could be done unless it happened again.
Despite the negative experience, Laís also received a great deal of solidarity from the local community. Irish residents and even the local Catholic Church sent her flowers and visited her salon to express their support, stating that the attacker’s views do not represent them. She now advocates for more awareness and education, believing that mutual respect is essential to prevent such incidents.
