Racism and Solidarity in Dublin: A Brazilian’s Story – Level 1

A woman from Brazil named Laís Mendes lives in Dublin, Ireland. One day, an older woman shouted at her and her friends. This was a racist attack. Laís felt very sad and hurt. She had never experienced such intense pain from racism before. Laís has a beauty salon, and the older woman often harasses her when walking past.
Many Brazilians live in Ireland. Sometimes, they face problems like racism and hate. The number of these problems, called hate crimes, is increasing in the country. This affects people from other countries too. Laís was scared for her two children, who are also Black. She thought about going back to Brazil.
After the attack, many kind Irish people showed their support. They sent her flowers and visited her salon. They told her that the angry woman does not represent their community. Laís was moved by their solidarity. She believes the solution is awareness. She says people need to understand that we are all equal and deserve respect, love, and care.
